Sarcosphaera coronaria

Marlborough Forest

Considered to be extremely rare in this area, as typically it is found in the Rockies, so I have been told. When I first discovered this I had no idea of its rarity. I simply thought it was a very pretty sac fungi, with its purplish tones. I sent it to Dr. Dalpe, a mycologist, who was able to identify it. In 2009, a group of mycologists from Ottawa and Montreal went to Marlborough to see this rare fungi for themselves.
