shadow & light

A dear friend whom I met here on PBase is in the last days of his life. Ted Chappell is a gentle spirited fellow who sees beauty wherever he looks, especially in the eyes of his beloved wife Lyn, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and many friends. His photos often celebrate the land, water, sky and creatures of his native New Zealand. CLICK HERE to visit Ted's photo galleries.

This self portrait incorporating light and shadow reminds me that life and death are one. It is we who imagine light is better than shadow, life is better than death. Soon Ted will know the truth. May he travel in trust surrounded by love.

Aroha, dear Ted...

I thought that is a very expressive light and shadow image...

Funny how a name sticks with you and Ted's did for me. How wonderful that you have found such a wonderful friend. I see the comments written on your photos and on mine and often wonder who these folks are. I met Marvin Baer in Portugal via and Pbase site and have remained friends with he and his wife over the years. May you both find strength at this time...here's looking to the 22nd!!!

I find it extremely hard to reply to the messages placed....They cut thru to my most basic emotions. I can only 'thank you.' Today has not been a good day.....I think anybody who 'meets' Patricia via her wonderful site is immediately enveloped in her presence. As a result, this small corner of the world is bringing me great spiritual comfort. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day........Currently it is Friday 13th 7.55pm and I can't keep my eyes open. Time for bed.

I too hope you make the assignment of the 22nd and beyond, Ted. Get out there and do what you love; the rest can sort itself out. It is apt that Patricia's moral compass should guide strangers to this place where they can say a few words that are truly felt. Good journey, both here and there...

All the best to you Ted, I sincerely hope u enjoy that assignment ....and many more.

I could not agree more. To respect light one must know the shadow. To fear death one must respect life. Love your SP, Patricia, your job is great and I do respect and admire you as a photographer and human being.

A beautiful image of a truely beautiful person. Your shaded face but your eyes are aware.....Perfect contrast colour with sharp focus on your wrap (mohair?).

My dear friend
I feel honoured that you have taken the time to mention me on your wonderful site. Often I wonder just how many comments I have made regarding your work, whether it it be photographic talent, your natural perception of what is right in this world, how you find beauty in the darkest places.....how you motivate, inspire and encourage others.....As I so often told you during some very dark hours which yes, I still occasionally go thru, I consider my countless blessings.......The most beautiful loving wife and family one could be blessed with, similarly with friends, experiences with life...........You are always included amongst those blessings. The summary is I am selfish really to want even more. So many leave this world without ever living........I certainly have lived, and continue to do so, every day is a good day (although evenings are not particularly looked forward to....The paradise I live in, I had better stop or this will turn into an unabridged version of Tolstoy's 'War and Peace.' You are a most unique individual, it shows via your words, the thoughts and spaces unsaid but understood between your words. I am a better and more contented person for having known you.
For some amazing reason, I continue to baffle the experts. They expected me to pass away within 3 days of signing myself out of hospital and stopping all the endless drugs completely. That was 23rd Jan 09. Apart from a small supply of Morphine and other similar 'assists' when the time comes, I have taken nothing since. Currently it is Feb 12th. I have actually accepted a photographic assignment for Sunday Feb 22nd.......Wouldn't it be great if I did reach that goal?
Perhaps too much to hope for, but one must have hope. Negative thoughts are purely destructive and achieve nothing. Heck, me saying that to you! Look at your circumstances and what you do with your life, the affect it has on countless other people....
Aroha as always (love and respect in Maori)
