Xocolatl is the Nahuatl (Aztec) word for chocolate (The X is pronounced sh). It comes from the combination of two words Xocolli (bitter) and Atl (water).
The Aztecs enjoyed chocolate as a frothed hot drink and added chili to it.
As chocolate does not grow in the Central Mexican plateau they imported it as tribute from Southern Mexico.
Interestingly in both Aztec and Maya culture chocolate is associated with fertility.
