(anas bernieri)
The Bernier's Teal or Madagascar Teal is endemic to Madagascar. It is found in scattered locations on the west coast of the island where it favours freshwater or brackish lakes and especially coastal mangroves.
Currently the Bernier's Teal (or Madagascar Teal) is on the verge of extinction and is classified as 'endangered' as there are only about 1500 left in the world. The reason these ducks are so endangered is because their natural habitat, mangrove forests are being destroyed for timber and fuel. The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust has been undergoing a successful breeding program since 1995.The name commemorates the French surgeon Chevalier J A Bernier.
