‘The Awakening’ revisited

This sculpture was created by J. Seward Johnson, Jr., in 1980 and used to be situated at Hains Point in DC – a far nicer location -- but was sold by the artist and moved to the touristy National Harbor, Maryland. I’ve photographed it before – several years ago and many years ago -- but saw it again when we were at the harbor looking for a cherry blossom sculpture. Last time there were kids climbing all over it; I think it looks better like this.

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly
unsharp.

Fantastic. I recall your previous photo of this and am glad to see this very impressive view. I'm not aware of the sculpture's origin/inspiration but it makes me think of Antero Vipunen - the ground giant from the Finnish Kalevala.

It's an interesting artwork but I agree with you - I don't like the location! Would be fabulous along a stretch of sandy beach. V

Rather disconcerting seeing it buried like that. I like the patterns in the sand. V

an effective view giving appropriate weight to the face..still, the hands are also expressive..
