1880s carriage house in process of restoration, conversion

This old carriage house is located in our alley and has looked abandoned for as long as we’ve owned a house here, more than 30 years. I imagine it was built in the 1880s, like all the houses on our block, and I heard that there were horses stabled here until the 1950s.

Around six months ago, the owner’s son started cleaning it out – it was literally stuffed with all kinds of junk, including a forklift. The daughter got a building permit and is in the slow process of restoring it, with the idea of making it into a home. I’ve peeked inside, and it’s spotless now, and a new roof was recently put on it. The next picture will show one of these already restored carriage houses, also in our alley, which won’t hold a candle to this one when it’s finished.

Nice photo, and the carriage house has great character. I hope they keep the hay door at the top. V

The before state and the possible with a wide gulf left for the imagination to span. Very nice photography! V

not an attractive building, yet it does seem solid...encouraging that history is being preserved on Capitol Hill..

Lots of scope for those with limitedness pockets and imagination, I sure it will be fabulous.
