“Headlight Click Beetle,” Bajos Del Toro, Costa Rica, by Cristobal Serrano, Alicante, Spain. This image was the winner of the Small World category.
Says Serrano: “Bioluminescence is a fascinating phenomenon. One night, I was walking through a tropical cloud forest and was attracted by the movement of two constant, bright lights. Approaching stealthily, I came upon this headlight beetle with two bright spots on its head. Hypnotized by the glowing yellow lights as the bug moved around the leaf, I used a long exposure synchronized with a flash at the end to take this picture.”
I couldn't even imagine what this was a picture of until I read the description. Simply fascinating!
