The Makkah (Mecca) Gate, probably built in Ottoman times and one of the most carefully preserved structures in old Balad. It was difficult to find much information on it, but a commenter on one site said: “Perhaps what is most noticeable is the absence of any influence of the Najdi style (i.e. architectural features common in similar structures in central Saudi Arabia), pointing to Jeddah's historical openness to the rest of the Muslim world, rather than its connections to the interior of the Kingdom.” http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Middle_East/Saudi_Arabia/Mintaqat_Makkah/Jiddah-1806894/Things_To_Do-Jiddah-Bab_Makkah_Makkah_Gate-BR-1.html
It is also located at the edge of Balad on an incredibly busy street, so capturing it sans cars was impossible. I see from pictures that it’s lit up at night – yet another thing to do on a return trip to Jeddah.
