Ending at the beginning

This image is very similar to the first one in this gallery, but I liked the scene and felt it summed up the enormity of this disaster quite well.

The river crested this morning at close to 9 meters and is now starting to recede, by 2 centimeters as of today (although a thunderstorm this evening has not helped matters at all). The roads will re-emerge from under the floodwaters and the tunnels and basements will be pumped out. Transportation will get back to normal, I assume within weeks. Businesses cut off by the water will hopefully recover and the great inconvenience to residents caused by this will slowly ease. Although the flood was frightening to witness and experience, I think Budapest fared better than many low-lying little towns along the Danube, where the threat to people and their homes and livelihoods, to say nothing of their lives, was much more urgent.

I enjoyed attempting this photo reportage of the flood, and appreciate all the support and kind words received in the process. I'm hoping I won't have the opportunity to photograph something of this magnitude again.

Excellent closure to your superb gallery Helen! BV
Was there any loss of life as a result of the flooding?

It is not a great situation, for sure. But it did lead to some exceptional photographs. If this were side by side with the same view before the flood, I think the effect would be even more startling. Well done, Helen. ~V~
