Budapest under Water: 2013 Danube Flood

The Danube River was at its highest levels in Budapest in 50 years and crested on Monday, June 10, at close to 9 meters. The rakpart (roads along the riverbank) were submerged, and water was lapping at the steps of the Parliament building. River navigation was halted as the water was so high, the vessels couldn't clear the bridges, and several islands in the municipal area were closed to the public. Around 1,300 people were evacuated further down the river, but Budapest itself survived the disaster without major damage.

That looks terrible. We once experienced very high levels when we got to Budapest for a river cruise (and were ultimately put up in a hotel rather than the ship), but it was not anything like this. Poor Budapest.

Very interesting Helen. Amazing the power of nature. Was in Dresden in early June and saw similar scenes though not as spectacular.

Hi Helen, In Germany, where I am now, the flood disaster is out of proportion and still getting worse in some places. Everybody is working here to try and stop the water or to strenghten the dikes. Worse is that there are so many disaster tourists that they block the roads for the emergency vehicels.
