Gdańsk: Poland's Undiscovered Treasure

Situated close to Poland's Baltic Sea coast, Gdańsk was almost totally destroyed during World War II but was painstakingly and faithfully reconstructed in the '50s and today reflects its former glory and charm. It was first mentioned in 997, was the capital of a Slav duchy in Pomerania, was taken over by the Teutonic Knights and was a member of the Hanseatic League. It was a wealthy city and today is known for its mercantile tradition and openness to the world. Its historic area is stunning, full of historic houses rebuilt as they had looked for centuries, and it also has some beautiful churches and magnificent public buildings. I don't know how popular Gdańsk is in general, but it is definitely worth a visit for something out of the ordinary.
