20130624 121 SERIES - Black-crowned Night Heron.jpg

Ottawa West

Five images from a set of 10 consecutive shots of a B-c Night Heron catching its prey from an elevated perch.

Top image; Having spotted its prey the Heron prepares to strike from a low crouched position. Note, the small circular disturbance at the top of the water.

"SPLASH"

Going full stretch. Note how the Heron hangs on tight with its talons/feet. Seems almost impossible for it to righten itself from this position, but......

....with its prey secured and the help of some wing-flaps, it gets back up.

Triumphant, it proudly displays its catch, a Tadpole.
