The Common Tern is a regular summer resident at Mississippi Lake. They nest in small colonies on rocky out-crops and small islands, such as The Crab Islands located in the narrow section of the lake, north of Pickerel Point. There they can regularly be seen hovering above the water, then when they spots a small fish, they plunge, or dive into the water. The Terns appreciate the hazard markers put out every spring by The Mississippi Lake Association volunteers. The markers make perfect perches on which to rest and/or from which to look for prey. The photo on the Cover Page of the Tern taking off from one of the markers was taken on June 17, 2007 near Rocky Point (Lake Park).
