The top of Arthur's Seat is a rather unremitting lump of volcanic rock that was formed from the "Lion's Head" lava spout of the original volcano. It is heavily weathered, with the odd patch of grass poking through. This Snow Bunting was reasonably at home there, finding the odd seeds to peck at. The top is also a good place for Painted Lady on migration, along with Red Admiral, resident Grayling Butterflies and the occasional Common Blue. Graylings may also be present in good numbers on parts of the west side but it's a bit steep to transect ! More regular birds here are Meadow Pipit and Carrion Crow, with Skylark, Linnet, Jackdaw and passage Wheatear on the adjoining Windy Knowe.
