St Margaret's Loch provides a home for a number of water birds. Species seen here include Lesser Black-backed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Mute Swan, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Coot, Moorhen, Greylag Goose, Canada Goose, Grey Heron and even Common Sandpiper when the water levels are low. A burn flows from Hunter's Bog into St Margaret’s Loch at GR 327510,673790. This is often a good spot for Small Coppers, and has also produced an occasional dragonfly in the form of a Common Darter. The hillside above the loch provide a rich habitat for numerous micro moths as well as birds, and butterflies such as Ringlet and Common Blue can be seen in this area on a good day.
