Coba Butterfly

Yes, I know… Just what you need, another butterfly shot… :~)

Well, this one is a bit special to me for the memory of the place,
and for the unusual circumstance that brought about this
particular shot and a smile to my face…

I was bicycling along 1400 year old roads among the Ruins of Coba, Mexico,
an experience I will never forget. I stopped and hiked to an
ancient pyramid, hidden in the dense jungle, teeming with
humidity and the calls of strange birds, along
with the constant clicking of my camera shutter.

I hiked back to my bike and found this beautiful butterfly perched on the seat.
He was so still and calm that I placed my finger next to him, gave a little nudge,
and he hopped right onto my finger! I thought, wow, what a fun picture
to take of this incredible butterfly perched
on my hand, with this incredible jungle in the background.

Holding perfectly still, I slowly reached for the camera that was strapped
around my neck, with my left hand, as I was holding the butterfly in my right.
Duh! There was no physical way I could come up with to focus or press
the shutter using a single left hand. As I tried to set the butterfly
back down on the seat, he flew off to a nearby tree trunk, which is where
I photographed him. And I am sure it is probably a better photograph,
as I really like the way his wing design mimics the design on the trunk…

Lesson learned. I now have a little technique, thanks to long fingers,
whereby I can reach from underneath the camera (set to auto-focus),
left handed, and one finger will reach the shutter. Just in case…. :~)

Don't know why I havent read the story before, when I first came here. :)
You know, I just can't shoot butterflies. LOL Every time I've got a good angle and they dont fly away from me, I dont have my camera. :))
Great job, GP.
