ribs

Chloride, Arizona

saguaros can live for up to 200 years...once one dies the inner structure is revealed...the skeleton of the plant consists of wooden rods known as ribs...even in this state the cactus can still serve as a home for spiders, caterpillars, lizards, snakes, mice, and a variety of birds

a close look here reveals a bird figure on the lower branch to the right...I missed that shot, but the keen-eyed Dan got it: http://www.pbase.com/dlgphoto/image/162437968

Nice with the road runner on the branch. A skeleton like this will stand for years, after 200+ years of life.

I am definitely glad you posted this and the note on what its's all about. I now realize that both of my images were from the same cactus. Well captured in its environment. ~V~
