off the north tip of Denman Island is tiny Sandy Island, also known locally as Tree Island..this was the ultimate destination of the long hike, a place reachable on foot when a sandy causeway appears at low tide..clearly some others had gotten here in sailboats, doubtless a quicker trip...west across the water from here is the mountainous Vancouver Island, in the area of the community of Union Bay
