Persepolis was the residence of Darius I (558-486 B.C).
At No Ruz (Persian New Year) the king held a yearly audience
where representatives of all the 28 vassal states appeared in
procession to offer gifts to His Majesty.
We can see that procession in beautifully detailed carvings on both sides
of the staircase that leads to the Apadana (reception hall).

The palace was burnt down by Alexander the Great (locally called
Alexander from Macedonia) 330 B.C in an attempt to destroy Persepolis,
but the remainders are still very impressive.

Afgevaardigden van alle 28 vazalstaten verschenen daar in processie om de
de koning geschenken aan te bieden.
Die processie is afgebeeld in prachtig gedetailleerd beeldhouwwerk aan beide
zijden van de trap die naar de Apadana (Ontvangstzaal) leidt.

Het paleis werd in brand gestoken in 330 vC. door Alexander de Grote (In Iran bekend als
Alexander van Macedonië) in een poging Persepolis te verwoesten,
maar wat overgebleven is is nog altijd zeer indrukwekkend.
