Greyback Cane Beetle, Dermolepida albohirtum

Innisfail, Qld

This is a native beetle that feeds on grass. Sugar cane is a really big, sweet type of grass so when it was introduced to Australia
the cane beetles were very happy. Unfortunately their revelry got out of hand and upset the cane growers who got sick of their
loud music. They looked for a solution to their problems and some bright spark (Raquel Dexter was her name, apparently)
suggested Cane Toads. Cane toads had no impact on this beetle, as they couldn't swallow the adults and couldn't find the
larvae, and became a major pest species themselves.
