OMG... just reading the name of this custard powder, I believed it was done with some boiled and mixed birds....!
But happily Wikipedia told me that it is Mr.Alfred Bird who first formulated and first cooked in it 1837. It is a cornflour (US cornstarch)-based powder which thickens to form a custard-like sauce when mixed with milk and heated to a sufficient temperature.... whew...!

I certainly remember Bird's custard powder! I can still recall the feel of it in its package, and mixing it up with milk on the stove! Nice one. V
