Being Different

Vietnam

I have mixed feelings when looking at this image. A combination of joy as I look at the lady staring at my direction with a coming smile, the boy sitting dazed in deep thoughts, while the girl looks dazzled. What draws me to the shot most is the little girl having pale almost colorless skin and brown hair. A very disturbing yet eye catching image as she doesn't fit in with the rest of the people beacuse of her appearance.

I am attracted to the diversity shown in this photo. Diversity in responses to you, the photographer. Diversity in physical appearance. Diversity in age. A most beautiful photo.

I noticed the contrast from the thunmbnail and I feel the image shows the spectrum of human appearance and yet we are all the same. V.

I don't find this image disturbing at all, Tricia. It is certainly incongruous and unexpected, but it makes the point that being "different" is not, in itself, a "handicap" but rather an advantage. This child adds striking diversity and beauty, in her own way, to this family. (Assuming, of course that it is a family, and that the child is not a temporary visitor.) There is also a strongly incongruous contrast between the little girl's reaction to your presence and the reactions of the others. It is an image that asks more questions of the viewer than it answers -- leaving it up to each of us to see whatever we wish to see here.

I love the fact that the little red-haired girl is different! I am a bit of a square peg myself, so I always love to celebrate diversity! And here, you've shown that those with differences can meld together nicely. Excellent photograph ;)

Wonderful story, Tricia. But for me, rather the boy is the one doesn't fit in, as he's deep ih his thoughts, while the gitl and the woman are obviously sharing a moment looking into your camera. But that's just my interpretation. Well seen and well captured! v.

A beautiful shot of people sharing a moment with you and us through the camera. Tremendous details!!!

My immediate response was definitely the same. She's definitely somewhat out of place, though the next though I had was the marvelous color and details on the clothes on all them. Wonderful shot. Very interesting for sure.

What's so disturbing about being different? Its not her that is disturbing
as much as those you do not accept her for what she is. Unique as all of us.

Yes, thought-provoking portrait! The red hair and fair skin does stand out.
