19 - Erwtensoep - Snert

S... Soup or Snert

Erwtensoep, also called "snert" is a form of green split-pea soup emblematic of Dutch cuisine. Traditionally eaten in winter, erwtensoep has a very thick consistency, often includes pork and sausage, and is almost a stew rather than a soup. One source says "You should be able to stand a spoon upright in a good pea soup."

It is customarily served with rye bread (roggebrood) and cheese or butter. The meat may be put on the rye bread and eaten with mustard.

It is not uncommon to be sold in small cups at the so called 'Koek en zopie' outlets on frozen canals as a hearty snack to iceskaters.

I don't think I've ever had a split pea soup! Looks good especially on a cold day.

A hearty and tasty looking meal. I make fresh pea soup in the summer, so I must try this winter version!

Lovely images andlooks good but I'm not a fan on split peas! Great shots and it does look good but I'm not sure I'd like it. I'll eat the meat though! LOL!

Oh I adore split pea & ham soup...we make ours with a smoked bacon hock as the stock base, then strip the meat off the bone ( if it has,
n't fallen off already :>) Warming & tasty.

I don't know if this would look good if I didn't love split pea soup...always something I thought smelled better than it looked. Wonderful shots. Bet it tasted good!

Great shots. Where I come from, Cologne, Germany it's called Ähzezupp. These images make me homesick. Can't get Ähzezupp in California. Enjoy this delicious and hearty meal. Wonderful to see this. "V"

Good...!
Would be great to have a thread where each of us presents a "gastronomic cultural heritage", isn't it ?

Looks like you're a big fan! Reminds me of the mushy peas one gets
in English chipshops.
