The long break in the Alps Mountains of the moon's norther area is called Alpine Valley. There is a narrow rille that runs most of its length, and can be seen under ideal conditions with a large telescope. To the left of the valley is the smooth-bottomed crater Plato, about 100 kilometers across. This photo is the small part of a frame taken with a Nikon D80, a 16mm Brandon eyepiece mounted on the 20-inch Panarusky telescope at the Jim and Gwen Plunkett Observatory at Harrington Beach State Park, in Lake Church, Wisconsin.
