Dowagiac, we saw one yesterday. We've had some tree logging going on within a 50 acre range and assume it's been displaced. Glad to know its a mimic.

@Jeanmarie... This is an Eastern Fox Snake and is not poisonous. It mimics the rattling of a rattle snake but does not actually have a rattle, the sound being the rustling in the dry leaves etc. So... IF you INDEED heard a real "rattling" sound then it was not this snake.

D.G.... Did your dad PURPOSELY run the snake over!!!!????

I also had one of these visitors in my yard today. I had my dog out for a romp and he ran up on this and began barking like crazy. I looked to see what he was barking at and it scared me something awful. It raised up and started making a rattling sound. I too thought it might be a rattle snake and got away fast. Now I'm afraid to take my dog in the yard. Will this thing strike and is it poisioness?

We have snaks in our pond that look like this Fox snake but it's head has a hood when on land and you get near it.. Do Fox snaks swim? We live in Belleville, MI
