Many of the photos in this gallery were taken in Singapore,

Many of the photos in this gallery were taken in Singapore, some at the Jurong Bird Park or the Zoological Gardens, others are free-ranging and some are wild. The birds are from Southeast Asia, South America and Africa.

A number of these photos are featured in the World Bird Gallery, A great reference site for birds: World Bird Gallery

Equipment used for these photos: Canon 10D & 30D, EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS, EF 300mm f4.0L IS, EF 24-70mm f2.8L, EF 28-135mm f4.5-5.6 IS, Canon 1.4X II & 2.0X II tele converters (on the 70-200mm), Canon 420EX & 550EX Speedlites for a little fill flash to eliminate shadows and add catch light to the eyes. The photos were taken primarily handheld, some with a Manfrotto monopod and Gitzo ballhead.

I have been a keeper in Jurong Bird Park for 5 years, but I left a year ago. Seeing all the pictures here really bring back all those memories.....How I miss the birds.....

Thank you for your generosity. I am working with the Santa Barbara Zoo to ID the birds in their aviaries. I come to this site first for photos. It's have a small zoo and we all work creatively the get them the graphics they deserve (rather than can afford). Your site certainly helps us achieve that goal.

The Kingfisher Could you have heard the kingfisher scream and scold at me When I went this morning early down to the smiling sea! He clamored so loud and harshly, I laughed at him for his pains, And off he flew with a shattered note, like the sound of falling chains He perched on the rock above me, and kept up such a din, He looked so fine with his collar snot-white beneath his chin, And his cap of velvet, black and bright, and his jacket of lovely blue, I looked, admired, and called to him, "Good morning! How do you do?" But his kingship was so offended! He hadn�t a pleasant word, Only the crossest jargon ever screamed by a bird. The gray sandpiper on one leg stood still in sheer surprise, And gazed at me, and gazed at him, with shining bead-black eyes, And pensively sent up so sweet and delicate a note, Ringing so high and clear from out her dainty, mottled throat, That echo round the silent shore caught up the clear refrain, And sent the charming music back again, and yet again. hiii this is a very beautiful collection of birds. I actually saw this collection when i was in a very bad mood.It really trigerred my thoughts and made me comfortable . Made me more joyous seeing them.But i would have one small comment, if more pictures of the birds flying freely in the vast blue sky were also included it would have been great.

Great photos! The Purple-headed Glossy Starling (= Lamprotornis purpureiceps) is actually a Purple Glossy Starling (= Lamprotornis purpureus). The Purple-headed Glossy Starling has dark (not yellow) eyes and bluish-green (not purple) underparts.

We have been attempting to identify an escaped Leafbird variety in my mother-in-laws Garden near Reading in England. This gallery has helped tremendously towards this, although our Birds plumage is duller than the images shown and it's colour is more mottled and less distinct; however this gallery contains a very stunning and beautiful collection of photographs. I REALLY love your gallery! I love birds and I never really saw a blue crowned hanging parrot before as a photo! I never knew it will be right side up-Lol! Hi, Nice pics... The pics of the African crowned cranes are that of the common East African species Balerica regulorum and not the (Black) West African species B. pavonina. They differ in size and shade of grey, the West Africans are dark enough to appear black...

While all your photos are stunning, the pix of the bee-eaters and barbets just totally blew me away. These are some of my favorites species of birds. Well all passerines really - true confessions. These smaller birds are so hard to get excellent shots of being they are so active. I'm thrilled I found your Gallery while I was doing a search on the Ruppell's Griffon Vulture. What an awesome photo! When that bird flies overtop of you, it leaves a shadow and scares the dookie out of you. Having experienced that once, I can almost feel that energy in that particular photo. I own a yahoo group called Link of the Day which spotlights different species of birds and aspects of aviculture. I'm going to showcase your gallery to the members for their enjoyment as well. Ben, I'm glad you enjoyed the bird images. Most of these were taken with the Canon 70-200 2.8L IS, of these the majority were with the Canon 1.4x TC and some with the 2.0x TC.

The single salmon crested cockatoo is better known as a Moluccan Cockatoo.In the second picture, the bird on the right is the Moluccan whilst the one on the left looks like a Bare-Eyed Cockatoo or "Little Corella" as they have previously been known. The next pic, titled "Goffin Cockatoo" looks like either a Bare-Eyed Cockatoo or a Slender-Billed Corella. The pictures are wonderful though, I especially loved the Macaw and bird of prey photo's.

The Jurong Bird park is a must see if you are that part of Asia and enjoy birds. The Waterfall Aviary is immense and specializes in African and South American birds. The South East Asian Aviary focuses on SEA and there is a new aviary scheduled for opening at the end of the year. I took those during the last 6 months of my residency in Singapore, they represent 8-10 trips to the Bird Park. I am trying to convince a friend to travel with me to Irian Jaya (West Papua) but if I get a positive response we will HAVE to stop in Singapore and see these wonderful birds. You must have photographed them over a period of time. To have done all this in one visit would have been exhausting. I can't stop coming back to see them over and over. The "stretching" bee-eater just makes me swoon. And I wrote a Thanksgiving poem about your cassowary: The turkey is a noble bird. Not so, the cassowary. He doesn't go with stuffing Nor white or red cranberry. YOU may think a turkey's mean. A cassowary's VERY. He'll whack you with his wattles Like a well-paid mercenary. So stick with turkey this year, folks, From his broad breast to his back. And if you get a feather-- It won't be blue or black. I'll be back for more of your great photos. Judy Foester

Had a better look at your beautiful pix. Your Spot-bellied Tree Duck is another bird called Ringed Teal, Callonetta leucophrys. The Aru Giant Kingfisher is better named Spangled Kookaburra, Dacelo tyro. Contact me for the White-tailed Sea-Eagle pic.
