Bes 1198

view map

Bes originally was a semi-god from Egypt, and was very popular in Cyprus also, often confused with Herakles. Here he holds a headless lioness by its legs. The big hole probably held a penis, but the catalogue mentions that it has politely been suggested it served as a fountain. After all, the Romans loved fountains. Roman, first-3rd century AD. The statue reaches 3,5 meters. This is a Roman copy after an Archaic statue.
