Each time I’m in the neighbourhood the Istanbul Archaeological Museum attracts me like a magnet. It houses some marvellous pieces, like a number of sarcophagi with great sculptural details. The displays are far above the level one sees in most Turkish museums. There is one drawback: some lighting is so focussed that taking pictures becomes very difficult, with harsh shadows and overall high contrast (also the colour temperature of the lighting changes from one point to the next). In combination with the Kodachrome slide film I used for the first set of scanned pictures the results were often weird, requiring lots of adjustments. I desaturated in some pictures most of the colour, in some almost coming up with pure black and white. The colour may vary from one picture to the next, even with the same subject. Sorry. I hope I offer plenty of detail, though. Later I will add more recent digital pictures. The texts I took from the excellent museum catalogue (the pictures of the sarcophagi are excellent). One hint: often parts of the museum complex are closed (there are three museum behind one gate: the archaeological, Cinili Kösk ceramics museum (for Iznik ware) and the museum of the ancient civilizations. Better check what is open on what day. Also sometimes part of the arch. museum itself is closed: check that too. NOTE: I added some pictures from a september 2007 visit, that I will sort in the existing series soon, now they are visible at the end. The same goes for June 2008. How time flies.

ARKEOLOJİ MÜZESİ

O semte her gittiğimde İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzesi beni bir mıknatıs gibi çekiyor. Nefis oyma ayrıntıları olan lahitler gibi bazı harika eserlere ev sahipliği yapıyor. Buranın sergileme düzeni, Türkiye’deki pek çok müzedekinden çok daha iyi. Bir tek sorun var: Bazı yerlerde aydınlatma o kadar odaklanmış ki fotoğraf çekmek çok zor oluyor, sert gölgeler ve çok yüksek kontrast oluşuyor (ayrıca ışıklandırmada renk ısısı, bir noktadan diğerine değişiyor). Taranan ilk resim koleksiyonunda kullandığım Kodachrome filminin bileşiminde elde ettiğim sonuçlar genelde tuhaftı ve pek çok düzeltme gerektirdi. Bazı resimlerde renklerin çoğunu matlaştırdım, bazıları neredeyse siyah beyaz olarak çıktı. Aynı konuyla ilgili olsa bile, renkler bir resimden diğerine farklılaşabiliyor. Bunun için üzgünüm. Umarım pek çok ayrıntıyı verebilmişimdir. Daha sonra, daha yeni dijital fotoğraflar ekleyeceğim. Metinleri, çok iyi hazırlanmış müze kataloğundan aldım (lahitlerin resimleri harika). Bir ipucu: müze kompleksinin kimi bölümleri genelde kapalı oluyor. Bir girişin ardında üç müze var; Arkeoloji Müzesi, Çinili Köşk Seramik Müzesi (İznik seramikleri için) ve Eski Şark Eserleri Müzesi. Hangi gün hangisinin açık olduğunu önceden kontrol etmeniz iyi olur. Bazen Arkeoloji Müzesinin bazı bölümleri de kapalı, bunu da kontrol edin.
