Tarsus 4358

This is the Ulu Camii or Camii Nur (Mosque of the light?). Built in 1579 by Ibrahim Bey, son of Ramazanoğli Piri Paşa it is a great work of art, and pretty big at that. I here show a series of pictures of the exterior and the interior. The entrance gate seems to be characteristic of Memluk architecture (I quote from a guide handed to me in the city, with the usual mixture of sound English and incomprehensible texts like "The worship area has been decorated in the east-west direction with original tiles that holds 14 columns. The mosques inner columns has been connected with a half-pointed arch, called Iran-Arch"). At any rate, its a fine building.

The entrance gate mentioned above.
