Sumela is situated at 62 kilometres from Trabzon. It was one of those austere monasteries where you had to climb your way up and find isolation. It was dedicated to Saint Mary. The frescoes date from 1740 or an 1860 restoration and extension. I am probably one of the few visitors who managed to take lots of pictures, but forgot to take the one where one looks up and sees the monastery kind of hanging along the flank of the hill, some hundred meters up. Sorry, Google will help you out. The other pictures will show that much destruction has gone on.
For once I will not try to "explain" the frescoes, their condition being so dismal.
