The so-called ‘Beautiful Artemis’. Cult statue, 2nd. century AD.

Marble, 174 cm high. Also excavated in the Prytaneion.

Whereas the Greek-Roman Artemis/Diana was a goddess of - amongst other things - hunting, the Artemis in Ephesus was a mother goddess (fertility goddess), and as such a localized version of the Anatolian mothergoddess Kybele.
