Hadım Ibrahim Paşa mosque by Sinan

Hadım meaning eunuch this was a mosque built for the second of the two Grand Vezirs named Ibrahim Paşa serving Süleyman the Magnificent. It has a fine porch (the imam explained that because of the Ramadan it was turned into secluded areas with plastic sheets that you can see on a picture, after Ramadan the ordinary view would be back). He also kindly showed me a mark on a lead part on one of the columns, telling me this was the mark of Sinan. The mosque was built in 1551, it is an octagon inscribed in a rectangle with galleries on each side. It has no columns but in the corners of the octagon shell-like pendentives support the dome. Tiles over the mihrab seem to be (according to the Strolling through Istanbul guidebook from which I quote) from the latest Iznik period or even 18th century from Tefkur Saray.

The founder’s grave is in an open türbe in the garden. Further buildings belonging to the original complex no longer exist.
