For some curious reason I have not dedicated a sub-gallery yet to the Sokollu Mehmet Paşa mosque, which is a jewel with its fine Iznik tiles from the best period. It is by Sinan, built in 1571-1572, for Esmahan Sultan, the daughter of Selim II and wife of the Grand Vezir Sokollu Mehmet Paşa. It was built on the site of an ancient church, the “Strolling Through Istanbul” guidebook tells us its columns were used in the mosque’s courtyard.
I am certain I have pictures of the mosque elsewhere, for the time being I just show the ones I took in December 2009 (the exif is wrong as for the year). In due course I will move other pictures here (I really must do some rearranging with my Istanbul pictures in general).
