Originally established in 1924 as the Coral Gables Military Academy in Coral Gables by George E. Merrick, the academy moved to bayfront land at 10601 Biscayne Boulevard in Miami Shores in 1932 and renamed as the Miami Military Academy. The academy was closed in 1974 and the land was sold to the Muss family for $7 million. All of the academy's buildings were bulldozed shortly thereafter and the Towers of Quayside condo development was built. Similar to numerous buildings that have been destroyed and replaced in Miami, there are no historical markers anywhere to remember the military academy on the bay for 42 years.
