Dr. John G. DuPuis Elementary School was located at W. 59th Place and W. 12th Avenue (Ludlam Road), in the northwest corner of property donated by Dr. DuPuis to Dade County Public Schools. Palm Springs Junior High was on the opposite side of the property in the southeast corner. Both schools opened in September 1957 and for a couple of years W. 12th Avenue was barely a two-lane dirt road on the west side of the school. The land west of the school and 12th Avenue was farmland until the Lovell Brothers built Palm Springs Estates from 59th Street south and Adler built homes from 59th Street north starting in 1960/1961 and it took a couple of years for those homes to be built all the way west to 16th Avenue.

The school was named after Dr. John Gordon DuPuis (1875-1955), a pioneer doctor, surgeon, cattle owner, dairy owner and land owner who lived in the Lemon City section of Miami. Dr. DuPuis acquired large amounts of acreage in South Florida and operated the White Belt Dairy in the Lemon City section of Miami starting in 1898. According to the school's website, Dr. DuPuis had a dream, a vision, to do only what he thought was best for the community. He wanted to make a contribution to society, and used his many advances and theories in science in order to fulfill his dream. He wanted to empower the people, teach them knowledge and wisdom as well. Dr. John G.
