1953 - the new Burdines department store on Miami Beach
Miami Beach, Florida
The original Burdines on Miami Beach was on Lincoln Road and was a beautiful Art Deco-styled store that opened on January 10, 1936. The spectacular opening at night drew thousands, including a bevy of models flown in from New York City.
This past weekend I drove by this sign... I'm happy to report the"Sunshine Fashions" part of this sign is still there!

The "new" Burdines Department Store on the SE corner of Meridian Avenue and 17th Street on Miami Beach replaced their original and smaller location on the SW corner of Lincoln Road and Meridian Avenue.
After vacating their previous location, the next tenant on Lincoln Road was Franklin-Simons. Richards Department store was the next tenant to occupy that space, and after Richards closed down, an art gallery and other diverse businesses took up residence over the years.
Regrettably, the holding company that purchased the Burdines properties folded "The Florida Store" into its Macy's operations around 2005-2006. Although the store is still there, the Burdine name - synonymous with South Florida for over 100 years - is just a memory...
