1954 - Closer aerial view of the Golden Glades Interchange looking west

Dade County, Florida

State Road 9 runs from the middle bottom up to the top. The interchange looks fouled up even back then with super long entrance and exit ramps with sharp turns.

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Ray, how right you are. Trying to incorporate the original bridges into later upgrades always led to a foul-up. The latest and greatest is the HOV flyover - it should have been devoted to a high speed direct connection of the Palmetto and I-95. Instead we got a huge waste of money and resources to add a lane to I-95 that could have been at ground level if they had removed the present Palmetto/I-95 connections.

If you watch Miami Dade TV, from time to time they put on some old WTJV productions. One of them is Ralph Rennick doing a story in 1960 about the bad design of the Golden Glades. How the traffic is always backed up because the design was poor. Years later, it's all still true. Today, we think of it as the exchange of SR825 and I-95. As this shows, neither of those roads were even there when this interchange started. No wonder it's still a mess.
