I went to Perrine Baptist pre-school in 1960, back when the church was located where US1 split just south of 168st. Went to Pinewood Acres kindergarten, Coral Reef Elementary first through fifth grade, and started at Westminster in 1968 and graduated from there in '73. Small world, huh?
I also remember Baptist Hospital opened in 1960. I spent 2 weeks there with Rhuematic fever, I was 5 years old. Believe it or not, there was a part of the hospital at the time that was open but no A/C. I think it was pediatrics. I still live in Miami and whenever I go there for blood work or whatever they freak out that my records go back to 1960.

This was not too far from my old neighborhood growing up(1959-1969). I lived on S.W. 133rd Street, bordered by Chapman Field Drive on one end and S.W. 62nd Avenue on the other. I went to Pinewood Acres School in kindergarden and switched to Westminster Christian School in 1st grade-5th grade. The 1st grade classroom that I was in back in 1965 is still standing right at the front of the school, although I think it may be used as an office now. Mrs. Marjorie Reynolds -1st grade, Mrs. Karen Miedema(sp?)-2nd grade, Mrs. Karen Sternberg-3rd grade, Mrs. Bolyard-4th grade, forgot who 5th grade teacher was. Daniel DeLange was the principal and then Mr. Ken Tannis took over. Our back yard was up against 50 acres of a pine/palmetto scrub Florida hammock. We built a fort back there and would hike around there all the time. Lots of rattlesnakes... My Dad taught me to shoot by the time I was 6 years old. Kids were given the greenlight to go out and "explore" back then. We didn't have all the weirdos that are out there today, kids were safe...
