Stade there for our Honeymoon in July 14,1972. It was the Best of Times. We enjoyed a Strawbery Ice cream Cone from the nearby Howard Jonson Restraint on the steps of the Castaways. Wanted to stay there for one of our wedding Anniversary's but the Castaways was not there anymore.

Was Bernie Toll the Manager of the Wreck bar back in the 60's early 70's?

Went there as a 9 year old, in 1967. They really catered activities for the whole family. It was a fun place to stay. I remember they had 6 swimming pools, but 4 of them were salt water pools. Why bother when you had the ocean.

Sorry till 4AM. I remember Judy. Worked her bar many times when she was out....Joe Hart would sit at the end of the bar some mornings.

I too worked at the castaways from 1973 to 1980 as a bartender. Worked the Wreck bar from 9pm-4pm and the pool or Go Go bar during the day. Best days for me as well. What fun.

Thank you everyone for posting your comments and memories because they tell more of a story about a place than just the photos and I'm sure everyone appreciates them.

Sandy of 18-AUG-2016, the value is only what a collector is willing to pay for the item you have. You could put it on eBay with a minimum price and you might get that or you might get two or three collectors get into a bidding war because they each really want the item for their collection and the price could really escalate. No one knows because it all depends on the luck of the auction. I would love to have a scan, or cell phone photo, of your menu to add to the site and I will emblazon your name across it and thank you under the photo and in the comments under the photo for contributing it. If you agree please send the scan or photo to me at OldMiamiMemories@gmail.com and give me your name as you want it to appear. Someday a serious collector might see it and make you an offer you can't refuse. Thanks!

Don

We use to stay at a motel down the street from the Castaways called the Golden Arrow motel. I have cousins who use to live in Hialeah and worked for Eastern Airlines back in the 60's. I remember my dad and mom along with my cousins would go over to the Castaways and Wreck Bar and drink a couple of Singa Por Slings. They would bring us back the umbrellas from the drinks. I remember getting my butt beat at Remo's Itallion rest because I did not like the food. I also remember eating at the "Hot Shops". One fond memory I have also is walking under the road at Haulover beach. My daughter and I were in Miami last April 2010 and went by that area, the tunnel is still there but Haulover Beach is now a nude beach. What great memories I have also of Crandon Park Zoo with the train and animals. The Sequarium was also fun. Getting back to the Golden Arrow motel, I remember crossing Collins Ave and going over to a Hotel on the Atlantic side and eating Danish pastries at a coffee shop. I am so glad I found this site it has brought back many special memories of my childhood years vacationing in Miami. Thank you for taking us down memory lane. I am lucky that my dad took quite a few 8mm home movies that I can go back and watch. Thanks, Jack from Tampa, Florida, keep up the good work.

Born and raised in Hialeah (1956). The wreck bar is where I purchased my first cocktail...they had the little tamborenes and sticks with little balls on the end to bang on the table...great memories...thanks!

Joy, welcome to the site and thank you for posting. I'm sending you an e-mail about your photos. Only the site owner can add photos and I'll be glad to add yours but they'll have to be in the Individuals & Small Groups gallery with the other individuals and small groups.

I've got photos of me and my friends here in 1966 - or maybe it was 1965. It was fantastic. Let me know if I can post the photos and I will. Great memories.

Seeing what's there now, just makes you sick. The significance of Mid-Century commercial architecture is reaching Miami too late - by 20 years, I guess. Other cities are rushing to save it - Palm Springs, the New Jersey coast - by I suppose that beachfront property is just too important.
