Thanks for the Memories, Too

Home, Dining room

I inherited this little camera after Scott got his Sony DSLR-A100. A month later, I got a Pbase account. He has served us both well over the past 4 years. From pictures of the ravages of Hurricane Katrina to the scenic vistas of San Francisco, I've filled scrapbooks with pictures from this little camera. Sadly, his age was showing. The shutter priority feature no longer worked and weird red, white, and blue pixelations were occuring in the photos which we believe were an indicator that the sensor was no longer quite up to snuff. I was having to clone out spots in every picture.

The choice of a camera was difficult. I balked completely at a DSLR being far too advanced and cumbersome for me. Mainly, I wanted something that I could slip into the side pocket of my purse. However, owning this little high end point and shoot, I wanted something with similar features--shutter and aperature priority modes, RAW capabilities (in case I ever head that direction), etc. I also wanted something that Scott could use in a pinch and not completely hate.

After much research and a few nights working a haunted house for some extra cash, I finally settled on the Canon G9 which for the most part seems to be an upgraded big brother to the S50. Almost all my old well-loved features are the same with new exciting features such as image stabilization, longer movie mode, simultaneous RAW/jpg shooting, a hot shoe spot, new shortcut buttons. It is slightly larger but still flat enough to fit in the side pocket of my purse.

The battery life is apparently not the best out there, but looking on the bright side, the batteries from the S50 are the same as the G9. So, I'm currently using the battery from the S50. It's almost like I still have him with me.

I wanted my first shot with the G9 to be the one I posted. Sadly, the second one turned out much better because I remembered to open the lens on the old camera. *sigh* The best laid plans and all that. . .

Below is Scott's tribute to the S50.

Here's to you little guy! Thanks for everything!

the s-50 was the one i used prior to purchasing a g9 i agree with you it was near perfect with incredible photographic results, i did not have any of the problems that you encountered ,very reluctant to let it go.

to date the g9 has lived up to all expectaions ,as i become familiar with all of it's potential i expect total satisfaction from this little gem.
