Bikecentennial - 1976, biketrip from coast to coast in the US

A 4,250 miles, 6,838 kilometers, bike-ride from Astoria, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia.

Bikecentennial the grandest touring event in the history of the bicycle.
More than 4.000 bicyclists from around the world took part in this majestic journey
to inaugurate the TRANS - AMERICA - TRAIL during the summer of 1976,
the 200th anniversary of American Independence
and the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the bicycle to the United States of America.

This gallery is a little photo-impression, mainly black and white scanned pictures, of the trip,
taken part by 5 persons (Mart Versluys, Aad Wolvers, Fia van Rijn, Marion Sprünken en Marjan
Schavemaker) inhabitants of a little town Warmond, near Leiden in The Netherlands.

Great photos of a momentous trip during that milestone year in American history. Really enjoyed looking. My girlfriend (now wife) and I did a similar trip that year only the lazy way, in a car!! We went North-South from the great lakes to Florida and stayed in both Williamsburg and Washington. The Bicentennial firework display in Washington was amazing!! Thanks for the memories Marjan!!BV

thanks for the memories. I did the TransAm with Amer.Lung Assn. with 196 other cyclists. 47 days, a trip of a lifetime. Feel lots of emotions looking at these shots. Congratulations...so glad you have these up. Flo Trekker #134

Hey Marjan I am most impressed that you can bike these distances and log it so wonderfully with a film camera at the same time. Jeddore is a nice place and you captured the old wooden lobster traps nicely.
