Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus
Our first encounter with this magnificent bird came after two attempts to visit its nest. The first time we set out on foot for what we were told was about a 30 minute walk. Four hours after we started we were less than half way there so we ended up turning back. There were just so many birds along the way that we had to stop every two minutes and take photos. On the second attempt we were driven out to the nest in a truck. Even in the truck it took us much longer than expected to get to the nest due to photography stops. When we arrived we saw two of these beauties sitting high in a bunch of tree branches in front of a gray overcast sky. We spent some time jockeying around trying to find a good angle then I noticed one of the birds had disappeared. I figured it flew away when out of the corner of my eye I saw something moving on the tree truck. When I looked to see what it was I saw this Hyacinth Macaw head sticking out of its nest hole. It didn’t stay like that for long but I thought it made for a cute picture.
