On the meaning of the "Wykagyl" notation in Briggs's drawing, Rick Marschall reports:
"Wykagyl is a country club -- an above-average golf course -- in New Rochelle, Westchester County, NY.
"Between New York City and Fairfield County, Connecticut, Westchester County -- in fact New Rochelle itself -- was the hub of an artists colony from the turn of the century into the 1920s (of course it lasted later with that "flavor" of artists, but eventually artists like Frederic Remington died, and Norman Rockwell moved away.)
"However the other cartoonists and illustrators associated with New Rochelle (and Wykagyl Country Club) included the Leyendecker Brothers and Alex Raymond. (that is, the Raymond Brothers!) John Cullen Murphy grew up there and modeled for Rockwell. Clare Briggs and many cartoonists immortalized the country club (maybe that's too strong a word if a New York barrister knows it not) -- and I have an old bootleg recording of George Gershwin and Fred Astaire (just studio stuff, not for release) singing, "I met my mademoiselle in New Rochelle... but what the hell... she'll do as well!" Milt Gross lived in Rye, Fontaine Fox lived in Greenwich CT, H T Webster lived in Stamford CT -- all nearby. All -- maybe not Gross -- golfed at Wykagyl."
