Clare Briggs

Notes on the ephemera, most of which are courtesy of the Bernard Collection:

The Goodyear Tire pamphlet was published in 1909. It contains about twenty of his cartoons.

The sheet music credits the words to "Ruth Owen Briggs," Briggs's wife.

Briggs and The New York Herald executed the contract in 1921. It brought Briggs over $75,000 and fifty percent of the syndicated revenues.

The Lockwood Cartooning School pamphlet contains a biography of Briggs and a number of tributes from fellow cartoonists to mark the occasion of his move from Chicago to New York.

Old Gold cigarettes commissioned to do a series of ads; two promotional pamphlets are known, and both date from 1927-1928. The yellow one is approximately 11" x 11"; the other is about 4" x 4".

The pamphlet entitled, "It happens in the best families" was sold at railroad stations; take a look at the insignia in the upper right-hand corner. It features reprints of his cartoons.

Drawing of how Briggs envisioned his own Skin-nay courtesy of F. C. Ware.
