Jim, I think there might have been a slight wind that ruffled the breast feathers. At 1/45th it would not take much.

Tom, as others have said this is a beautiful shot, the face and eyes gazing at you are mesmerizing. The thing I can't figure out is that according to the exif you have a new camera? Your 20D shots are always tack sharp for the full body of the birds, but on this one the breast does not really look all that sharp? At f8 I would think the full owl would be sharp. Am I missing something here, or is it just the difference between a 1.3 and a 1.6 crop body? I hope I'm not sounding critical, just curious, I've thought about the 1dmk2 for the extra AF points and tracking moving objects so I'm just wondering?
