As a small boy, whilst travelling to the seaside at West Wittering, I always remember passing this place, and it always stuck in my head. I always thought it was a ‘nice house’, certainly better than our modest two-bedroom abode.
Of course, at the time, I was totally unaware that this was just a humble lodge to Witley Park, a large private estate. It seems that the mansion was largely destroyed by fire in the early fifties, but you can read more about the millionaire who lived there here, and a photograph of the place here.
A few buildings on the estate survive and are now used as part of a conference centre.
