Our town began its ‘One World’ week today, celebrating the diverse cultures within our community. Since our town has had a mosque since the nineteenth century, we have had plenty of time to integrate and in fact Woking is a very harmonious community. The town also hosts a fair number of people of Italian, Spanish and Chinese extraction, and more recently others from many other cultures as migration has expanded.
I’m of the belief that this provides a great education of world life and once in a while consider how our way of living is not particularly dominant on the planet, despite the importance of the western world’s politics and trade.
This week, there will be several events, mostly indoors, of an international nature, but today at the bandstand shoppers were entertained by a Latino-Brazilian band, and then by the Sigma String Quartet.
The cellist here may be as English as they come, but that’s just another culture amongst many.
