September 10 2004:
The Heart of the Village

I have been on the Family History trail again, and find myself in Horsham St Faith’s, a few miles north of the city of Norwich in East Anglia. This village was home to my Great Grandfather, George Wiseman, and indeed many of his other relatives. He was born here in 1850, and I suspect he had visited all three buildings seen in this view on many occassions.

Well, I know for a fact that he was baptised in this church, and may have been married there to his first wife, Caroline. But perhaps he downed an ale or two at the ‘King's Head’ opposite, whilst in earlier years he would have almost certainly attended the Sunday School to study – that building can just be seen between the pub and the church, and is now used by the local children’s playgroup.

I do know which roads he lived in, but of course they are in the most part transformed beyond recognition today, but my mind did wonder when I went along one of the streets and saw a couple of old cottages…

George was a harness maker, a trade he continued to perform after moving to London. But I must say that I do not know of anybody doing this job today!

Who would have thought this may occur on this date...Ann's eyes have just opened wide when I told her :) Are things supposed to happen do you think...?

very cool, Ray . . .without the street markings, it could be from another time =]

Lovely picture, the story adds so much more meaning to what we see. It's great that you are able to find so much information on a direct ancestor. Enjoy the quest!

It must be a wonderful feeling to walk in the shadows of an ancestor. I can't do that (can't find any records!) but I long to know more of my roots. And for you to actually visit the places your great grandfather knew so well, a century and a half ago, well, that's very special.

Great shot Ray, could have named it Heart of the Family. Always fun to let your imagination run to the past.

3 of life's basic pursuits ... spiritual, learning, and relaxation ... all in one spot. This is a clean and interesting image. thanks for the family history.
