Sonoran Coralsnake

Around Home, Texas Canyon, Dragoon, Ariz

This beauty crossed the road right in front of me as I was walking home from work.
I wasn't sure if it was a Kingsnake or a Coralsnake until I looked it up at home.
The Coralsnake is venomous with neurotoxins. Ugh. I'm glad I didn't get any closer.
I watched him cross the road and slither away in the desert brush.

How striking this beauty is! I'd be so thrilled to see one I'd probably drop my camera! V

A beautiful specimen. The clue is if the black bands separate the red and yellow, it is Kingsnake, but if the yellow and red touch, it is a coral snake. Think of red and yellow as colors for caution or danger. We have these around us, too. Voted.

Too Cool!!! I've never seen one in the wild. Supposed to be a very gentle and even tempered snake. Coincidentley, there was a story in yesterdy's paper. The company that manufactured the antivenom went belly up. Bad news...all of the remaining coral snake antitoxin in stock is approaching the experation date!!! Good news (for us)...there has never been a fatality from the species found in Arizona.

Wonderful series, but a 75 mm lens put you pretty darn close.

“Red on yellow, kill a fellow” and this yellow color can be almost white. Be careful Carol!

Scary but fantastic, Carol! It really is a gorgeous snake but I guess all of that color does announce a warning. That must have been a thrilling experience. Great work!

Brightly colored serpent looks more like a bling necklace than a dangerous reptile.
Giancarlo Guzzardi21-May-2010 09:14
I know the fame of this dangerous reptile!

Wow! I'd be very careful not to walk anywhere near that one, Carol! Stay out of its domain! LOL! Terrific catch!!
