Peterhof Palace, St Petersburg

Peterhof has been described as the perfect expression of triumphalism. It was originally created by
Peter the Great in 1714-21, and transformed during the reign of Tsarina Elizabeth in 1745-55, when
the Palace and the Grand Cascade fountains were extended. The Palace and fountains were largely
destroyed in WWII, and restoration work began immediately after the end of the war and continues to
this day.
